The December 8th, 2011 Meeting...
twas our Big Christmas Party

The party started at 6pm with cocktails and dinner. President’s Report
All were Welcomed and wished a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! It was another wonderful year with some great diving.

Marshall Gross let us know that Bill Allen had his liver transplant and is home doing well.

At Chris Rule’s suggestion a place setting has been set for all who can’t be with us tonight.

Toast
Marshall Gross gave the toast to absent friends.

Les Michael gave the blessing.

Financial Statement
Sandy Jordan was the hostess and directed tables to the serving line. There was no business conducted except for giving away great prizes.

Our JANUARY MEETING will be held on Wednesday, January 4th at the Ramada Inn, San Jose Blvd. It will be a short meeting and part 1 of the movie “Hitler’s Lost Sub”. Part II will be shown in February

No new awards were given tonight, but we did rehash the past year’s awards with certificates being handed out.

No new awards were given out tonight, but just like the Coprolite we rehashed the past year’s funny dippy things done while diving.

At the August 2nd, 2011 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President David Martin.

President’s Report
The Holiday Party is set for Thursday, December 8th. The Cash Bar will open at 6pm with dinner following at 7pm. The cost is $35. per person and the Club does subsidize some of the cost.

The vote for the new slate of officers was presented. The following individuals were nominated David Martin, President; John DeRemer, Vice President; Monster Molyneux, Secretary; and Sandy Jordan, Treasurer. There was a request for any additional nominees. With none being offered, the nominations were closed for vote by Michael Sible and seconded by Chris Rule. With the vote taken with a unanimous vote the new officers were elected. All remaining positions will be appointed by the President.

Vice President Report
The next E-Board Meeting will be held at the Golden Corral on Wednesday, November 9th. Dinner will be at 6pm and the meeting will follow at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

The applications of Rick Dumm and Don Syme’s were voted on and unanimously approved.

During the months of January and February we will have a short meeting followed by the movie “Hilter’s Lost Sub”. We will watch half in January and the other half in February.

Dive Coordinator

November 12th - Rainbow River Dive Meet at 8:30 at K.P. Hold Park and depart the boat ramp at 9am. We are diving with Crystal Lodge Dive Center. It’s $10 per diver. Water temperature is 72 year round, 10 to 25 feet deep and very clear.

SPRING 2012

June 23rd & 24rd and August 18th & 19th - Venice Shark Tooth Dive with Florida West Scuba and Charters. Morning dives, arrive no later than 7am. 12 spots are reserved. Tanks and weights included in the price. We will get an updated dive price in January and have sign up sheets available at the February meeting.

EARLY SUMMER 2012

USS Oriskany (Pensacola) We have eight divers signed up. Have to be an Advanced Diver
Bonaire - Approx. $1,200 to $1,500. For more information from Marshall Gross.
Cozumel - Early June, nine days in Mexico, approx. $1,800 to $1,900 includes everything from the flights to food, drinks, dive, etc. Hotel Cozumel. For more information please see Marshall Gross.
North Carolina Wreck Dive - July 21st - 27th with Discovery Diving. John DeRemer is setting this dive trip up. It will be combined with a former dive group out of NJ. He booked a whole week; so everyone has greater flexibility in scheduling his/her dives. You should be an Advanced Diver or have numerous ocean dives under your belt. See John for more details.

Dive Reports
Monster and Annette Molyneux, Michael Sible and others went Pumpkin Carving at Lake X. Monster planned his dive well by getting a mesh bag and filling it with his pumpkin and 16 lbs. of weight. They went out about 15 feet into the lake and sat in approx. 4 ft of water. There they cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, placed some of the weight to hold the pumpkin down and began their carving.

20 people attended the Pumpkin Carving and we had 8 actual carvers/divers.
Monster took 1st with a Puking Pumpkin.
Michael Sible took 2nd for his Pirate Pumpkin.

A trip to Key West to dive the Vandenberg is scheduled for October 22nd. If interested, please contact Glen.
The annual Pumpkin carving contest will be held at Lake “X” on October 29. There will be prizes! All are welcome. The club will provide chicken and everyone is asked to bring a dish to share! Please contact Glen for further details!

Tonight’s program was presented by DAN:

Marty McCafferty, EMT-P, presented “Hazardous Marine Life Injuries”. I t was an excellent presentation.

Talked about lionfish, scorpion fish, jelly fish, man of wars, bristle worms, sea urchins and the very dangerous cone shells! Cone shells stings are very dangerous and a sting needs immediate medical attention.

There was a Tampa area story that a scuba tank had exploded and killed someone. It seems that it was a SCBA (used by firemen) unit that was the culprit.

We will be having our annual Pumpkin Carving dive on October 29th at Lake X. You will need to bring your own beverage, covered dish to share and a pumpkin. Chicken will be provided. The event will start at noon with divers in the water by 1pm. The cost is $5 per person and free for children under 12. Prizes will be rewarded for the best carved pumpkin. Non divers are welcome to attend.

Dive Reports
Gary Clem and Fred Sills dove Troy Springs. They had good visibility.
David Martin, Glen Akins and Elmer Osborne dove the Santa Fe. Glen found a nice arrowhead. There is limestone and grass growing on the limestone on the bottom.
A group went to West Palm Beach and dove with Narcosis. The water was murky with about 40 ft of visibility. They saw one of everything (turtle, lobster, etc).
Glen Akins flew to Puerto Rico and dove. He mentioned they are killing a lot of lionfish.
Marshall mentioned they pulled two 3ft bull sharks out of the Shawnee 90 miles up river.

Dippy Diver
David Martin was nominated and given the award. David decided to dive in the cold Santa Fe water with a shorty and no hoody. After getting into the water he claimed he couldn’t pee because he was so cold.

Coprolite Award
Wayne LeClaire was nominated. When Wayne surfaced from his dive, the water had gotten rough. He unfortunately hit the propellor while trying to climb the ladder. He ended up having 12 stitches. No one voted for Wayne to receive the award.

How many dives?

Good of the Order
Annette and Monster Molyneux have each achieved their 100th dive. Congratulations!

Master Scuba Divers - To become a master scuba diver you need to have a minimum of 100 hrs underwater, CPR, First Aid, Search and Recovery, Night and Rescue Diver.

Dive Reports

Marshall Gross went diving in Holbox, Mexico. It was a tranquil location with no telephones or TV. He was able to snorkel with golden rays and went diving with whale sharks. One 15ft. whale shark was even asleep. A three hour boat trip produced about 75 to 100 whale sharks with the largest being 30 ft. long. Check out the San Diego Shark Divers Website to see the video.
Four divers went to Venice. Elmer Osborne found a beautiful tooth during a shore dive. Dave Martin also found some nice teeth. Some small teeth and horse teeth were found. Dave and Elmer did a beach dive and saw a lot of small wild life.
Rick Rickert went diving off the shores of Jacksonville. It was mini lobster season, but he didn’t get any.
Chris Rule dived off Boynton Beach, FL and experienced some rough seas. He did some deeper dives on the outer reef. He saw a mature turtle with a large gash in its shell either from a boat of something that wanted to eat it.

JIA has contacted David Martin about where in the Caribbean would we like to see direct flights from JAX. The consensus was Cozumel, Belize, Grand Caymans, Cabo San Lucas, Bahamas, Bonaire, St. Marten and U.S. Virgin Islands.

Dive Reports

Marshall Gross, Annette and Monster Molyneux, Chris Rule, Ginny Winter and Ed Fite gave their Cozumel trip dive report. They had 8 club members and one non club member on the trip.
The weather was nice, however, the last three days the rain came in. The seas were flat and the visibility was good. There was a lot of sea life, numerous lion fish, crab, lobster, pipe fish, small fish and some huge 200 to 300 lb goliath grouper. There were no real issues and everyone had a great time.
The LeClaire’s went diving at Morrison Springs in Ponce de Leon. The cost was FREE! They descended about 41 feet to the opening of a hugh cavern. They also went diving at Paradise Springs in Ocala. The cost there was $30. At 15 feet down they saw whale bone fossils in the wall.
Several divers got shark teeth on the recent trip to Venice.
Marshall went diving in Pulmo - Sea of Cortez and saw an interesting octopus climbing on a vertical wall sideways. He saw barracuda and turtle. The water was rough and turbid.

At the May 4th, 2011 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 7:02pm by President David Martin.

President’s Report
All were welcomed at the May meeting and the visitors were introduced.
Dave asked how everyone enjoyed the buffet. The response was that everyone enjoyed the meal. Dave will go back and let management know. We need 20 people to eat and this month we had 29 and a youth.
The Earth Day Dive was a huge success. The divers covered over 600 yards and brought up approximately 450 lbs of garbage.

Vice President Report
John DeRemer made the motion to accept Bernard “Gene” and Michelle Rosseling into the dive club. The members unanimously passed the vote. Chris Lynch, Katie Aylor and Major Nimock put in their applications to the Club.

CHANGE OF VENUE - Next month the E-Board Meeting will be held at the Village Inn at 10140 San Jose Blvd. on Wednesday, May 11th. Dinner will be at 6pm and the meeting will follow at 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

Dive Reports
Rick Reckert went diving in St Lucia. The weather was rainy and the water was silty.He did a wall dive and an artificial reef where the visability was limited.He also dive the Piton Wall.The water was gin clear.He didn’t see anything large.

Marshall got to see the inside of Dallas, Ft. Worth Airport for 8 hours before arriving at this destination in Cabo San Lucas.He had 21 dives in seven days of diving.He saw everything from a mother and calf humpback whale, giant mantas (19 ft across), hammerhead, silver, black tip, white tip and silky sharks, porpoise, tuna, yellowtail, jacks and moray eel.

Hand Signal Presentation
Chris Rule, a 30 year veteran of diving, gave a presentation on hand signals. There areapprox. 6 basic hand signals. It is a unique underwater language. Some hand signals vary depending on what part of the world you are from. Slates are an easy way to communicate. However, there is always the more expensive head sets available to purchase.

Dippy Diver
David Martin was nominated for put two markers in the water.Unable to find one at the end of the day, Dave left his “JUNK” behind on Earth Day.

Coprolite Award
Glenn East was nominated and given the award for disregarding the instruction of diving between the boat and the shore line.Glenn ending up 100 ft. on the opposite side of the boat.

At the April 6th, 2011 Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President David Martin.

Doc Smyk gave Dave Martin the key to the Post Office Box.

Dave announced that a non-member, fairly new diver was interested in getting a group together to dive in Key West on July 11-15th. The cost is $280 for hotel and three days of diving. If anyone is interested, please see Dave.

John DeRemer, Vice President, was out-of-town. In his absence Sandy Jordan stood in. We have two new members: George Constantino and Bernard Rosseling. Mitch Maxson went diving in Belize. Glen Akins dove Blue Grotto and saw a lot of limestone and one catfish. Dave Martin went diving at Fernadina Beach. Kinsey Leonard had a great dive at Disney’s Epcot. The water was slightly chilly but the dive was very easy and lots of fun!

Show n’ Tell

Marhall Gross brought in and talked about the history of dive knives. He had a commercial knife with line cutter, a scuba pro stiletto knife, a razor and tungsten steel knife, GKP and a beautiful rosewood handle and gold knife.
John DeRemer showed a box end that held 10,000 22 short ammo, a 50 caliber bullet off a sub chaser off the coast of South Carolina, a .308 rifle shell military load with brass clip off the Schurz in North Carolina and an antique old red running lamp from the early 1900’s.

Dive Reports

Patrick McCarver went diving off Jacksonville and caught a a few lobster. He caught his largest lobster yet weighing in at 8 lbs.
Art La Rue brought in some artifacts from Cumberland Island. He caught the ferry off St. Mary’s and went on a 4 day backpacking trip. Art found fossils, sharks teeth lying on the road, whale vertebrae, fish vertebra, whale ear bones and a sperm whale tooth. Cumberland Island can be a great day trip.

CPR/AED Course is scheduled to be held on Thursday, January 24th from 7 to 9 at the Fleet Reserve Hall, 7673 Blanding Blvd. We need a minimum of 5 to have the class. The cost is $35.
A Basic Course will be taught a little later in the year.

Dive Reports

Rick Reckert did several dives during the Christmas Holiday. He went to Palm Beach and dove with Walkers Dive Charters. He also dove Pompano Beach. There was nothing to see and very depressing. The water temps were about 70 degrees.
Chris Rule did the Polar Plunge again this year. The water temperature was 49 degrees. BURR!
John and Debbie DeRemer dove St. Marten and St. Thomas. They saw several octopus during the day.
Michael Sible dove in 30 feet of water to tow a car out.
David Martin dove last year and spoke about his canoe trip and diving experience on the Swanee River. He found some interested Indian artifacts.
